The 5 Design Principles

Contrast, in my opinion, is the most popular design principle used today. Not only do we use contrast in photography/art, but we use it in our homes, clothing, and many other aspects of our everyday lives. The image I chose for contrast is a bunch of lemons, and one very pink lemon. I liked this example of contrast because the colors are bright and remind me of a hot summer day. The pink lemon clearly sticks out and is different from the rest, which quickly brought my attention to the contrast used in the photo.

Repetition has also become a very popular form of design. I see a lot of wallpapers and computer backgrounds that are used with repetition, and even some posters and collages that people print to put on their walls in their bedrooms. The picture I chose for repetition also adds to my fruit-theme. This photo is lemons drawn one next to another which reminded me of a phone case I used to have. The lemons look well-drawn and very organized.

Alignment is a very important design principle. If a photo is not aligned it looks unorganized which makes it less appealing to the eye. The photo I chose is of cherries and raspberries in the shape of a heart. The plain white background helped the colors of the fruit stand out which made the photo very appealing to my eyes. The fruit is clearly aligned in the shape of a heart and organized in a specific pattern.

Proximity, in my opinion one of the less important design principles. I feel as though proximity is very similar to alignment. I feel that the purpose of proximity is to keep the photo appealing to the eye. The photo I chose shows all different types of citrus fruits that are clearly organized into groups by color which makes the photo very satisfying to look at. Those with similars colors are in close proximity of each other to make known what the pattern of the photo is.

Lastly, hierarchy. Hierarchy is a very basic design principle and is used very often. We use this when it comes to research for school or personal things, it is one of the first learned design principle. The photo I chose has no significance other than personal preference of someone who thinks bananas are the superior fruit, in my personal opinion they are the worst fruit. But this photo is clear and straight to the point, that bananas are higher than any other fruit.

Summarizing a Sunset

The photograph I have chosen to share today is a picture of the sunset this past summer in Mystic, CT. I love watching sunset for numerous reasons, one being that you know you have completed the day, whether it was the best day of your life or the most challenging day you have ever faced, you did it. And nature it rewarding you with a stunning sunset to remind you how amazing this earth is and that everything has a beautiful ending even if it felt like a struggle to get there. I also enjoy watching the sunset because it is only a few minutes a day, where you can just sit peacefully and enjoy your surroundings, thinking about your day and self reflecting. I like to turn on some quiet relaxing music and watch all the colors change in what feels like seconds sometimes. You will never see the same sunset twice, and you will never have the same day twice, so I like to think of sunsets as a fresh start to a new day and take the evening to prepare myself for the day ahead of me.
